Pirdop Municipality, located in the city of Pirdop, covers an area of 152.4 square kilometers. It is situated in the southeastern part of the Zlatitsa-Pirdop Basin at an elevation of 672.962 meters above sea level. The municipality has a total population of 9,467 residents, with approximately 5,000 of them being of working age.
The majority of the active population in Pirdop Municipality is engaged in the non-ferrous mining industry and its associated production. The company „Aurubis-Bulgaria“ is located in the northwest outskirts of the Pirdop territory.
„Aurubis-Bulgaria“ is a copper mining plant owned by the German company „Aurubis“ in Pirdop, Bulgaria. It produces copper (black and refined) and sulfuric acid. The plant is situated between the cities of Pirdop and Zlatitsa, approximately 80 kilometers east of Sofia.
In 2005, the plant produced 240,000 tons of anode copper and 60,000 tons of cathode copper, with approximately half of the anode copper being sent for further processing to the company’s plant in Olen, Belgium.
With sales volume of around BGN 5.4 billion in 2020, „Aurubis-Bulgaria“ is the top-ranking Bulgarian company in terms of this indicator.
